Capital News Service Maryland

While working at Capital News Service on the digital desk, I learned to make interactive graphics using Highcharts, Google Fusion Tables, and Twitter Bootstrap. I gathered data from APIs, including setlist.fm’s API and the New York Times’ API, and learned to use this data in visual story telling.

I made an interactive map to track Governor Martin O'Malley's pre-campaign meetings before he announced his 2016 presidential bid. I also made a graphic that illustrated an increase in Maryland's exports to Russia, and co-created a Twitter Bootstrap website on the 2014 Maryland state elections. "Sticking Around: an examination of Foo Fighters setlists over 20 years" is a data project I made to analyze the changing position of songs in Foo Fighters setlists.

Best Films Breakdown

After I finished at Capital News Service, I took an advanced course at the University of Maryland on data visualization and web design. My "Best Films Breakdown" is a website with data viz and illustrations that compare the films on four best films lists (IMDb's Top 250, Rotten Tomatoes Top 100 Movies of All Time, Sight & Sound's 50 Greatest Films of All Time, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Best Picture Winners). I analyzed the data (the films in each list) based on genre, title, year released, and whether or not the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
